Is your Xbox 360 DVD reader broken? This replacement Dvd-rom Drive rocks!
Good afternoon people!
I forgot to write an article about my experience with DVD drive replacement in your Xbox 360. This guide will tell you the best drive to get to replace your broken DVD ROM drive that is already in your xbox 360.
As it turns out, the Xbox has had 2 major problems over the course of both product lines - the original and xbox 360.
- Overheating issues
- DVD Read issues
Now, the DVD Read issues can be caused by two things:
- Your DVD rom drive is broken - this is pretty common because they use junk readers
- Their is problems with the way your xbox is saving your game data, causing the game to corrupt during game play - also very common.
Now, when you get the disk read errors, your game is shut off and you get the standard ‘unable to read disk because it might be damaged or dirty. Clean it and retry again’. The cause listed is almost always wrong. I have found this error to happen on games taken right out of the box so you know it’s not the disk.
The Toshiba Ts-h943 Dvd-rom Drive is the best one.
If you have determined that your problems are due to a broken dvd reader, I highly suggest you buy this toshiba TS DVD rom drive from Amazon found here.
This drive is the ONLY drive that does not require you to flash your xbox 360’s firmware. This process is actually pretty complicated if you are a new user and suggest you avoid using any other drive except for the one listed above. The fix is pretty simple, basically all you have to do is unscrew your xbox cover, yank out the old dvd rom drive and cable, and insert the Toshiba drive and cable into the proper place. Really is not a big deal at all.

will this dvd fit inside the green x-box 360. I ordered a sam-sung from another place and when i tried to install it the sam-sung was to long.
Hey man, does that really work?!!?! If it does I think I will buy one now, my drive has been starting to give out. So no matter the original drive, this one will work?
Hey Guys,
From what I have read this is the same drive they use in the xbox 360 now which is why you don’t need to flash the bios when you install it. It should fit perfectly in the xbox 360 as long as you don’t have some sort of specially modified case.
Also keep in mind that the error message about not being able to read the disk might not be because of a failure in your DVD drive. Half the time it has to do with the RROD error and the other half is because of a dvd drive failure. You can check my other posts out how to fix the RROD error if you are getting it.
Best of luck!
From what I have read and researched, the RROD is mainly caused by over heating due to a poor design in the GPU cooler. The DVD read failure comes from a bad drive. As well, each Xbox 360 has a special key encoded to it’s DVD drive making it impossible to just swap a drive for a new one, without extracting your original drive key and loading it into a new drive (hard to do). The easiest method (so long as it’s the laser that’s quit on your DVD drive) is to buy the exact same model of DVD drive that is in your Xbox and swamping the OLD PCB circuit board onto the NEW DVD drive. Depending on the age of your Xbox 360 you could have 1 of 3 different drives. http://www.biline.ca/X-Box/360/allthreedvdsf360.jpg
I found that picture of all 3 of them side by side. I also read something about a possible 4th drive variation (probably the newest 360s) having a BenQ drive. Here’s a link to that as well http://www.llamma.com/xbox360/Xbox_360_DVD_Drive_Comparison.htm
I hope this info helps, I’ll be repairing an Xbox360 I bought on Ebay that had a Disk Tray Error. So that’s why I’ve been reading up on these things ^_~

Hey, I just bought his one and when I installed it, it says play DVD instead of Play Game, and then an error message pops up:
Please insert this disc in an XBox 360 console.
Any ideas on how to fix this?
@Jen
Have you tried switching the circuit board from your broken drive to your new drive? It is as simple as unscrewing a couple screws and snapping it in.
I forgot to include this step in my original post. Basically once you have your new drive, you have to switch out the circuit board from the old one and put it in your new drive. This part of the drive should be fine. After it is switched, it should be detected just fine.
